Werneth’s date with destiny

OLDHAM GOLF LEAGUE
WERNETH ‘A’ face a showdown with Stamford tonight as the Oldham and District Golf League reaches its regular-season conclusion.
Following a nine-point haul from two games in a week with Crompton and Royton (6-2 at home, and 3-5 away), Lee Rowbotham’s team know a win of any kind will guarantee them a top-two play-off spot in the ‘A’ Section East Division.
But they realise that a draw would see them miss out on countback as both teams would finish on identical points and records, and they would go out on the head-to-head, having been beaten 6-2 at the Mossley track earlier in the season.
Crompton and Royton’s hopes faded with those two recent results and it would take a massive win at leaders Blackley tonight to spoil the party.
The West Section took a decisive twist after four teams had been separated by a single point with two games to play.
Ashton halted rivals Denton in their tracks by winning 5-3 away, while Dukinfield went one better when they shocked Brookdale 6-2 at the Woodhouses course.
