BOWLS ROUND-UP

GARY Ellis is £2,000 better off and has booked his place in the Champion of Champions event in Blackpool next month.

The Nimble Nook and Tonge star (pictured) landed two major wins in the space of 24 hours at the weekend.

On Saturday, he won the Olympic Classic at Walton, Liverpool, picking up the £1,000 top prize and earning that vital place at the Waterloo Hotel next month.

After beating Darren Williams of Wales 21-9 in the quarter-finals, Ellis saw off Sale’s Roger Morgan 21-14 in the semi-finals before beating Chris Brown (Sheffield) 21-14 in the final.

Ellis followed that up a day later when winning the Richmond Classic, also in Liverpool.

In picking up another £1,000, he defeated Dave Gwilliam (Stockport) 21-19 in the quarter-finals, Radcliffe’s Paul Dudley 21-20 in the semis, and Liverpool’s Terry Glover 21-13 in the final.

SUNDAY’S bad weather forced the postponement of the Saddleworth League’s Law Swallow Cup semi-finals and final at Springbank.

These matches will now take place on Sunday, September 7 at the same venue.
