SAM Gee scored a hat-trick in the first half hour as Oldham RL under-20s went on to beat Keighley Cougars 40-22 in their last home game of the season.

“It was a good team performance, but Sammy was in a different league,” said coach Neil Roden, of the club’s vice-captain (pictured), who scored tries in the eighth, 25th and 30th minutes and was then taken off for a breather.

His fellow first-teamers Danny Whitmore and Paddy Mooney also showed up well, watched by head coach Scott Naylor and his No. 2, Lee Spencer.

Mooney, Sam Singleton and Connor Partington (two) also crossed the Cougars line, while Tom Dempsey kicked six goals from seven attempts.

Having enjoyed first use of the slope, Roughyeds led 34-6 at half-time, but they failed to maintain their momentum, scoring only one try to Keighley’s three in a second half in which they were mainly playing without the ball.

Astonishingly, they gave away nine second-half penalties to Keighley’s one, as a result of which they were mainly pinned down at the bottom end of the ground and unable to break out.
