GOLF:

HOME advantage proved crucial as Stuart Hopkinson won the Oldham and District Centenary Trophy at Crompton and Royton.

Hopkinson survived a nervous wait to beat club colleagues Jason Webster and Ben Gledhill in a card play-off after all three carded nett 67s.

The host club also took the best gross prize thanks to Michael Shaw’s 71.

Hopkinson, a 10 handicapper, has been a member at Crompton and Royton since 1979, having taken up golf seven years earlier.

He said: “I’m delighted to have won this. I had won a couple of majors at our club, but to win an Oldham and District event is great.”

Stuart was one of the last players out at 2.10pm and didn’t know his target.

“It was perhaps as well,” he said. “I just played the course and afterwards had to wait a while in the club while the scores were checked.”

CAPTAIN’S weekend at Ashton saw three competitions take place, two of them over 36 holes.

Neil Hallsworth won the Captain’s Putter with a nett two-round total of 135 after a 68 and 67.

Glyn Andrew was runner-up with 67 and 72 for 139, followed by David Lewis, who shot 70 and 71 for 141, beating Gary Wilson in a card play-off.

Lee Butterworth had rounds of 69 and 74 to win the 36-hole gross Martin Wild Trophy. Andy Lomas was runner-up after rounds of 72 and 74.

PHIL Dockerty won the club championship at Oldham with a two-round gross total of 147.

Runner-up was Andy Milner on 151, followed by Cliff Butler on 153.

CHRIS Peirson won lady-captain Julia Wild’s prize at Oldham with a two-round return of 67+68=135.

Runner-up was Mary Buckley (66+71=137), while the sweep went to Sheila Antrobus (75+69=144).

First-day prize was won by Karen Phanco (67), second-day honours went to Jill Nolan (68), and the best gross return was 163 by Bev Scholes.

The Edwards Trophy was collected by Sheila Antrobus (90-20-70), ahead of Chris Peirson (86-14-72).

SHEILA Cooper and Liz Hinchliffe scored 36 Stableford points to win Saddleworth’s Scott Leggatt Foursomes. Kathy Scott and Janice Nicholson were runners-up with 31 points.

At Blackley, Mrs Captain’s Cup was won by Sophie Garrity, with a nett 70. Next came Barbara Roberts, who beat Debbie Barber on a card play-off after both players returned 74s.
