MOSSLEY’S Seel Park date with big-spending Salford City ended in a 3-1 defeat, but the hosts gave a good account of themselves in front of watching Manchester United legend Gary Neville.
City were taken over by United’s famed ‘Class of ‘92’ during the summer and manager Phil Power was handed a playing budget that the rest of the Evo-Stik League Division One North side can only dream of.
The result of that was evident on Saturday as the visitors boasted former Football League stars Danny Webber, Gareth Seddon and Jason Jarrett in their starting line-up.
Ashley Dunn opened the scoring for Salford, and it remained 1-0 until half-time.
Former Watford, Sheffield United and Leeds United ace Webber doubled the visitors’ lead just past the hour mark, but the Lilywhites halved the deficit with 14 minutes to go when Dougie Carroll slotted home from the penalty spot.
But former Lilywhite Sam Madeley wrapped up Salford’s victory with just three minutes left.
Mossley were back in action today (3pm) with an away league clash at Padiham.
CHADDERTON’S terrific early-season form continued with a 2-0 home victory against Atherton LR.
The Broadway outfit are up to fourth place in the North-West Counties League First Division table as Matty Russell (penalty) and Lee Mallitt scored in their third victory of the season.
Following back-to-back heavy defeats, Oldham Boro will have been encouraged by a well-earned 0-0 draw at Northwich Flixton Villa.
Chaddy and Boro return to action on Saturday.
