BOWLS:
GARY Ellis had a day to remember yesterday.
In the afternoon, crown green bowling’s top player won a Bank Holiday Invitation 32 and £300 top prize at AEU, Openshaw, beating Meltham’s Jack Dyson 21-10 in the final.
Ellis went straight from Openshaw to his home club, Nimble Nook, to help the team’s bid to beat Hopwood in a winner-take-all Chadderton League showdown.
He beat David Gwilliam 21-9 as the Nook registered an emphatic 11-3 victory.
Ellis now has his sights on a fourth Waterloo Handicap title in Blackpool.
The competition’s final-64 draw will be made on Friday.
Competitors will play on September 13, with further matches on the following Monday and Tuesday and finals on September 17.
