Oldham 31, Thornton Cleveleys 3

RUGBY UNION: OLDHAM secured a big North Lancs Division One win against Thornton Cleveleys at Manor Park.

Oldham made the early running. Max Horsfall made a great break, the ball was passed through five pairs of hands before Martin Hamer raced over for a try. Callum Meagram goaled to give the home side a 7-0 lead.

Thornton replied with a penalty before another quick line-out saw the ball travel for Meagram crossed to increase the lead to 12-3.

On the half-hour, Brian Massey was on the end of a good passing move to score in the corner, and on half time Oldham bagged what will easily be a contender for try the season.

Will Mellor made an initial break, and the ball must have travelled between nine different pairs of hands before Charlie Roscoe went over to the left of the posts. Meagram added the conversion to make it 24-3 at the interval. Max Horsfall raced over for the try after 63 minutes, and Meagram again converted, to wrap up the scoring.

Oldham’s man of the match was Hamer, who was outstanding. He was closely chased to the award by Ryan North and Horsfall, who caused havoc in the Thornton defence.
