Birdie blitz!

GOLF: WERNETH’S finals day produced a pairs competition to remember, with golf of the highest quality..

Club champion Adam Rowbotham and partner Geoff Dawson reached the turn in four under and found themselves one DOWN to eventual winners Lee Rowbotham - Adam’s brother - and past captain James Buckley.

They had traded birdies for halves at the first, third, fourth and eighth but also lost the seventh and ninth to birdies to trail after winning the sixth with a rare par.

The two Rowbothams then both made birdie at 10, but wins at 11 and 13 took Lee and James clear and they sealed the 4 and 3 success with another birdie at the par-five 15th!

The Hetherington Trophy success completed a double for Lee: earlier in the day he had seen off a fine effort from 11-handicapper Quentin Cartwright with a win on the last green. The highlight of that match — also littered with birdies - was Lee making an eagle at the par-five eighth to halve Quentin’s four net three.

Current district champion Lee has the chance to make it a hat-trick of knock-out finals success when he takes on Tony Roddy in the Mellor Cup on Saturday.

In other finals played at the Garden Suburb course at the weekend, Les Dooley and Jack Suttie won the foursomes title after a 19th-hole win over Adam Rowbotham and Shaun Rattigan. Suttie bagged his own double by partnering Sheila Antrobus to a 3&2 win over the captain and lady captain, Paul Gough and Patricia Grant, in the Mixed Foursomes.
