Power switch pays dividends

Angling: TRI-CAST rod Ken Power emerged victorious in a match on the Broken Cross length of the Trent and Mersey Canal between Farm Road and ICI.

Starting on squatt over groundbait at 12 metres, Power switched to 14 metres with two hours to go - and it proved a smart move. He kept catching small roach and gudgeon for a 5lb 4oz bag.

Travelling partner Dave Holland (Tri-Cast Highfield) also used squatt over groundbait, but caught a few roach on hemp across for 4lb 6oz of gudgeon and roach.

Power was in the mix for honours in Tuesday’s Old Hough Fishery open, but had to settle for second place as Kevin Twigg had a 52lb 12oz catch against his 43lb 2oz.

THE Old Hough Fishery open on Saturday went to Ken Potts, who had a massive 93lb 1oz of carp on meat over groundbait down the edge. He was followed by Ben Clarke’s 70lb 13oz of carp.

CHRIS Butterworth claimed top honours in the last of the Diggle AS Tuesday evening matches.

The long pole and meat was the winning combination, tempting 38lb 8oz of carp and skimmers.

Organiser Dave Machin also made the frame, netting runners-up spot with his 31lb 5oz of skimmers and carp on corn.

Diggle AS are staging Tuesday matches on Tanners Dam on September 23, October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18, December 4. Details: Dave on 07879 474029.

A FIELD of 31 teams took part in the Division Two Nationals on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal between Burscough and Wigan. Hard going, but there were plenty of weights of more than a kilo. My team, Tri-Cast Rochdale, was a pre-event favourites, but missed out on the podium. But we gained promotion after sneaking into the top 10.

Wigan dominated the match with a massive 273 points from a possible 310.

Sensas North West were second with 245 and Middy Dams and Locks third with 235.

AS I wasn’t picked for the Nationals, I was looking forward to wetting a line in Sunday’s Wigan match at Burscough. There was general disappointment as the best pegs had barges parked on them.

A net of 5lb was good enough for overall victory, while I managed 20 roach for 1lb 4oz.
