Springhead miss from spot again

FOOTBALL: SPRINGHEAD’S indifferent start to the FBT Manchester League Premier Division season continued as they were unlucky to lose 1-0 at high-flying Monton.

Five minutes before the break ’Head were given a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Jonny Pauley was upended in the box for a penalty. Paul Stevenson took the spot-kick, but it was saved well by the Monton ’keeper. ’Head have now missed five of their last six penalties.

As the local side pushed on in the second half, they were undone when Monton scored with their only real effort on Osman Bushara’s goal.

There was a terrific 6-1 victory for Avro at East Manchester, while Royton Town drew 3-3 at Walshaw.

Hollinwood currently sit in pole position in Division One following their 3-0 win at Wilmslow Albion.

Man-of-the-match Rob Thomas, Michael Hoggard and Reuben Abreu were on target.

Meanwhile, Hollinwood’s reserves also continued their fine run of form in the Manchester Amateur Trophy as they crushed their Monton Amateurs counterparts 14-1.

Veteran striker Steve Barrow, Jamie Moore and Mike Taylor each scored four goals, while Duncan Knott chipped in with two more.

Avro’s second string crushed Salford Victoria 12-1 in the same competition. Uppermill beat Beechfield United 3-2 in Division One as Jordan Stepian, Joel Longmore and Mike Brickill scored.
