Stamford’s atack-ing intent

GOLF: STAMFORD claimed the Brian Atack Trophy in the traditional Oldham and District Golf League end-of-season team tournament.

Played at Denton in glorious weather, the course was in fantastic order for the 160-plus competitors.

And a Stamford pair led the way: ‘B’ team captain Scott Troy and Tony McClusky securing 45 points, including a front nine of 25, for a three-point winning margin.

Their hefty tally helped to take Stamford’s best three-card total (45+41+38) to 124 and a five-points victory over Werneth (41+40+38=119).

Next came North Manchester (40+40+38=118), Ashton (40+40+37=118) and host club Denton (39+39+38=116).

The event doubled as the league’s presentation evening, with Fairfield completing an ‘A’ and ‘B’ East double in the fairplay award and Brookdale ‘A’ and Castle Hawk ‘B’ winning in the West.

Ashton ‘A’ (’A’ Section winners for the first time in 18 years), Dukinfield ‘A’ (’A’ Cup winners) and Blackley ‘B’ (’B’ Cup winners) also collected silverware from Denton captain David Schofield.

The league’s remaining trophy is the ‘B’ Section play-off, which will see Blackley bid for a league and cup double against North Manchester at Saddleworth on Sunday.

FORMER Athletic hot-shot Darren Beckford is no slouch on the golf course.

Playing in Ashton’s Stableford competition on Sunday, 10-handicapper Beckford — a successful striker during manager Joe Royle’s first spell at Boundary Park in the early 1990s — scored 35 points to top the lists.

MARY Buckley and Linda Hall won Oldham’s Edith Antrobus Trophy with a 4 and 2 victory over Julia Wild and Chris Peirson. Jane Antrobus won the Buckley Cup singles’ knock-out with a 1up verdict against Jill Nolan.
