Avro too strong

FOOTBALL:

SPRINGHEAD suffered their third consecutive home FBT Manchester League Premier Division loss as local rivals Avro won 2-0 at Ashfield Crescent.

Mistakes in the home side’s defence proved costly and were punished by Avro. The first goal came when a mix-up between Frankie Byrne and ’keeper Osman Bushara allowed Kane Wallwork to nip in to beat them both and lob into an empty net. ’Head were two down only five minutes later.

after leaving Callum Jackson unmarked to head home easily.

Despite Avro’s youth they offered a far more physical presence than the hosts could muster in a display that lacked character. The closest ’Head came to getting back into the game in the second half was when Ryan Hanson raced clear, only to be denied by ’keeper Roy Potts.

There was disappointment for Royton Town in the Lancashire Shield as they went down 2-1 at Collegiate Old Boys.

Uppermill, second in Division One, crashed 8-0 at Campion in the West Riding Challenge Cup.

In Division Two, Hollinwood reserves continued their good run of form with an exciting 4-4 derby draw with high-flying Avro reserves.

THE Midas Plumbing and Heating Oldham Sunday League is to investigate incidents involving Fitton Hill of the Jack Abbott Premier Division, writes JOHN GILDER.

The league is remaining tight-lipped over alleged unsavoury incidents in recent weeks. Two games involving Fitton Hill - both against Heyside FC - were abandoned in the first half.

The league clash between Heyside and Fitton Hill on September 28 was abandoned after 13 minutes because of the reaction, it has been claimed, of the Fitton Hill team to a Heyside penalty.

The two sides met again seven days later in the President’s Trophy, and this time the tie was abandoned five minutes before half-time.

A league website added: “The Oldham Sunday League committee is very concerned by the number of games that have been abandoned lately.

“The committee will take action if teams are proved to have caused any abandonments in the OSL.”
