Snooker:

HAYLEY Hadaway aims to be queen of the green baize after becoming the first female to play in the Oldham Amateur Snooker League – despite expecting a baby.

Amazingly, Hayley only began playing snooker seriously a month before the start of the new season, which is seven weeks old. She recently played her first match for Stanley Road ‘B’, losing on the black after a close-fought encounter.

Hayley intends to play for a few more weeks but is 22 weeks pregnant and will soon be forced to hang up her cue until at least next season.

The 22 year old explained: “I used to play pool, but one day started a game of snooker. “My dad Jeff, who runs the club, had to teach me how to play, including the colours and their points values.

“My partner, Danny, also plays snooker so he has helped me, too. Now when we plan a night together, we don’t stay in like some couples and watch a video - we go for a game of snooker!”

Such has been Hayley’s progress that she was encouraged to join Stanley Road’s ‘B’ team - but wasn’t allowed to play until league delegates had voted to allow it

Said Hayley: “Women should be allowed to play in the league if they want to, so I hope others will be encouraged to do the same now I’ve been accepted.”

A BREAK of 51 from Reece Kershaw was enough to clinch the third frame for Blue Club ‘A’ in their Oldham Amateur Snooker League match against the same club’s ‘B’ team.

But Kershaw’s sterling efforts were not enough to set his team on their way to victory as the ‘B’ side recorded a 4-2 verdict.

Meanwhile, a second successive 4-2 victory for North Chadderton ‘A’, this time at home to Stanley Road ‘A’, secured their place at the top of the table.

Royton Band went to the top of the cards table after a 4-0 defeat of Three Cs ‘A’.
