Burnley brushed aside at Manor Park

RUGBY UNION:

UNBEATEN Oldham maintained their form as they saw off North Lancashire One strugglers Burnley 33-10 at Manor Park.

The table-topping hosts got off to a terrific start, opening the scoring after six minutes. Player-coach Gareth Barber ran out of defence and threw a tremendous 20-metre pass to Max Horsfall who raced clear of the Burnley cover to score out wide.

It didn’t take long for inconsistencies to creep into the Oldham game plan and they started to give away too many penalties, one of which was converted to make it 5-3.

The hosts responded with Jordan McEwan stealing the ball which eventually reached Callum Megram, who sprinted behind the posts for a try, which he converted.

Barber then sent a kick up the middle for four Oldham players to chase with hardly a defender in sight. Josh Watson won the race to score and Megram converted to make it 19-3 at half time.

Oldham had to wait until 16 minutes into the second period before Will Mellor took a quick-tap penalty, raced 30 metres and sent Barber away to score between the posts. Megram added the extras and it was 26-3.

Almost straight from the kick off, Ryan North set off on another of his incredible runs.

This time no-one managed to lay a hand on him and he scored behind the posts.

Megram concluded the Oldham scoring with the conversion, but despite a deficit of 33 points to three, Burnley were out to prove they were no pushovers. They kept pushing to the final whistle, and managed a consolation converted try.
