Heyside’s Schofield ahead of the game

LEADERS Heyside extended their Hudderfield and District League unbeaten run to half-a-dozen games with a hard-fought 2-0 win at third-place HV Academicals.
The opening 15 minutes of this Division Two clash proved scrappy as the home side tried to impose their physical style of play on the pacesetters.
Heyside stood firm and went ahead midway through the first half. Academicals failed to clear a corner and Daniel Dunn whipped in the ball for defender Gary Schofield to powerfully head home his first goal of the season.
RIFLE Range ‘A’ held their nerve from the penalty spot to book their place in round two of the North-West Champion of Champions Cup.
The Jack Abbott Premier Division outfit won the spot-kick shoot-out 5-4 after the tie against Ormskirk side Halsall had ended 3-3.
Range created numerous early chances, but fell behind in the 40th minute. Halsall’s lead did not last long, though, as man-of-the-match Carl Beamish found himself free at the back post to slot home the equaliser.
An unfortunate slip allowed Halsall to regain the lead in the 55th minute, but Range were back level again when Ryan Hobin converted a penalty. Substitute Luke Butler put Range in front only for Halsall to draw level with a penalty with three minutes left.
The tie went straight to penalties and after three each, the Halsall full-back sent the ball over the bar, putting Range through.
