Leighton treble lifts Springhead

FOOTBALL: SPRINGHEAD returned to winning ways in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division with a emphatic 6-3 win over Chapel Town — their first victory at Ashfield Crescent this season.

While they produced some exhilarating attacking football, the home side’s defensive frailties were still apparent. The local side were one down in the sixth minute after a fantastic strike.

Springhead’s response was immediate: Leighton Stephenson fired them in front with 15 minutes on the clock.

Stephenson then grabbed his second but Town capitalised on two poor pieces of play to restore parity - all within the first 30 minutes!

Stephenson completed his treble before the break with a fine volley.

Springhead’s went two in front again when a Town full-back scored an own goal before the hour, and it was left to Stevenson to secure the points with 15 minutes left, lifting Springhead out of the bottom four.

Elsewhere in the top flight, Avro clinched a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Atherton Town, but mid-table Royton Town succumbed 4-1 at Stockport Georgians.

Leaders Uppermill beat previously-unbeaten Hollinwood 2-1, Gerard Forde and Merv Davies taking the goals. This was Hollinwood’s first loss in seven games.

Chadderton reserves held hosts Breightmet United to a 2-2 draw.
