IT could scarcely have been a better weekend for Chadderton-based Anthony ‘Million Dollar’ Crolla.

The lightweight star wowed fans in Dublin by comprehensively out-pointing tough Hungarian Gyorgi Mizsei Jnr to extend his professional record to 29 wins and two draws from 35 fights.

And it was quickly announced afterwards that Crolla will fight Miami-based Cuban tough guy Richar Abril for the WBA world title at the Manchester Arena on January 23.

Crolla, who got a 60-54 decision from referee David Irving after completely dominating all six rounds against Mizsei Jnr, also celebrated his 28th birthday yesterday.

His trainer Joe Gallagher said: ‘It’s been a great weekend for Anthony. He’s put in a perfect performance and to hear he has finally got his world title shot is a brilliant birthday present.”

Crolla’s big-time promoter Eddie Hearn, who went through lengthy discussions to secure a shot at 32-year-old Abril’s WBA crown, added: “Anthony has worked so hard in his career so has earned his shot.”

“To have the world title bout in Manchester is a huge factor,” added Crolla. “I am a Manchester lad so to be fighting in Manchester for a world title, I couldn’t ask for anything more - except to win.”
