Saddleworth League pays its respects to batsman

CRICKET: A MINUTE’S silence was held at last night’s monthly meeting of the Saddleworth and District Cricket League in memory of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who died two days after being struck on the neck by a bouncer in a domestic game.

The meeting featured the first-round draw for next season’s Tanner Cup, with beaten finalists in 2014, Moorside, pitted against Saddleworth at Turf Pit Lane.

Holders Heyside won’t be defending their crown after they switched to the Central Lancashire League.

The first round draw is:

Moorside v Saddleworth; Greenfield v Shaw; Stayley v Hollinwood; Droylsden v Glodwick; Austerlands v South West Manchester; Wythenshawe v Friarmere; Micklehurst v Uppermill. Bye: Whalley Range. Ties to be played, Sunday May 17.

Second round draw:

Micklehurst/Uppermill v Austerlands/South West Manchester; Droylsden/Glodwick v Stayley/Hollinwood; Wythenshawe/Friarmere v Greenfield/Shaw; Moorside/Saddleworth v Whalley Range. Ties to be played on Sunday, June 21.
