Late cry-offs take their toll as Higgy suffer away woe

DEPLETED Higginshaw slumped to a 52-6 loss at Salford City Roosters, who were registering their first win of the season in the North-West Counties League.

After several late cry-offs, secretary John Mellor bemoaned the fact that Higgy could only call on 12 players for the trip.

And the visitors soon found themselves on the back foot as Roosters registered three early tries through Alan Hargreaves, Ben Connor and Christian Higgins, of which two were converted.

Higgy then improved in defence, with Mathew Corbally, Daniel Ogden, Paul Turner and Nathan Burke all pulling off key tackles.

The local outfit got on the scoresheet with a great team try five minutes before the break.

Martyn Swaine put away Damian Booth, who in turn picked out Turner, before Michael Hall was released for his first Higgy score after a great cross-field run. Swaine kicked the goal.

At 16-6, Higgy were back in the game, but Roosters then took a firm grip on proceedings.

They ran-in 36 unanswered points thanks Alan Hargreaves, who completed a hat-trick, Martin Judge (two), Higgins, Connor, Sean Winstanley and Michael Hall. Judge also landed a couple of goals.
