Stunner for Springhead
Date published: 12 December 2014
FBT Manchester League outfit Springhead crashed out of the West Riding County Cup when beaten 4-1 away at Leeds City from the West Yorkshire League.
The visitors started the game full of confidence on the back of a recent run of five wins from their previous six games, and they took the lead after seven minutes.
Ryan Hanson jinked inside a full-back and was upended just inside the box to give Springhead a penalty. Ryan Fagan duly stroked the ball home from the spot.
Leeds then began to assert themselves and deservedly equalised after 25 minutes when a striker turned superbly on the edge of the box before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Osman Bushara.
The same forward then gave Leeds the lead when he curled home a free-kick from 25 yards.
He then sealed his hat-trick five minutes before half time when he finished neatly at the back post.
Fagan almost reduced the defecit on the stroke of half-time when his stunning effort flashed wide.
The second period was evenly matched as ’Head pushed for a way back into the game, but they found the home side’s defence a tough nut to crack.
Leeds’ victory was wrapped up with 15 minutes to go when a dreadful mix-up between Kion Pryce and Bushara allowed a Leeds forward to prod home.
There was much better news for Springhead’s second string, who won their West Riding Trophy clash at Shelf United 10-0.
In the Manchester League Gilgryst Cup, Royton Town progressed thanks to a 4-2 home win against Chapel Town.
Hollinwood thumped Wilmslow Albion 5-1 in the Murray Trophy competition.
