Fairway to a fair deal

MARSDEN Golf Club have big plans to increase numbers.

The sport has been hit hard by the recession, with club membership falling around the country because of fees which people cannot afford any more.

Memberships have been cancelled due to cost, which has then impacted on keeping facilities and equipment up-to-date.

In an attempt to buck the trend, the nine-hole course at Marsden, positioned on the edge of the Pennines, have unveliled plans to improve the golfing experience.

They include a winter golf centre featuring an indoor simulator and undercover floodlit driving bays, plus they are looking to lay down an all-year-round putting facility.

Marsden have also looked at the cost in a bid to attract a wider membership base.

Their goal is simple — to get families playing the game.

A full membership can be bought for £399, women pay £99, the pensioner rate is £335, while for juniors it is just £10.

There is a small administration fee for full membership, but this is placed back on the members card to spend on equipment, food or drink.
