Reds alert

Date published: 17 December 2014

DESPITE the absence of five players, leaders Oldham Netball Club beat Worcester Reds 58-28 in National Premier League Division One.

The missing quintet were on England ‘A’ duty, and the visitors to Hathershaw Sports College tried to catch a much-changed Oldham side cold by coming out of the blocks fast and hard.

The Reds’ policy was successful to a degree but, after a shaky start, the hosts clicked into gear with the ever-reliable shooting force of Kathryn Turner and Krista Enziano putting their side 11-10 in front after the first quarter.

With little experience on the bench, coach Debbie Hallas relied on those players on court to put things right.

A tighter defensive unit from Kerry Almond and Abigail Tyrrell meant the Reds were limited in their attempts on goal in the second quarter.

In attack, the connection between Maria McAndrew and Turner on the centre pass meant the ball was reaching the circle with pace and ease.

A more convincing period of play from the home team meant a half-time lead of 27-18.

With Rachel Henry and Gabs Marshall prominent, Oldham had plenty of turnover in the third quarter, while time out by the Reds allowed Hallas to shuffle the pack.

Taylor Cullen made her Premier League debut at wing defence and slotted in well. A low-scoring quarter saw Oldham extend their advantage to 37-23.

Susie Armstrong made her bow in the final quarter at goal keeper, and she made an immediate impact.

Turnovers from Armstrong and Marshall were converted in the shooting circle with ease as unbeaten Oldham completed another victory.

Starting seven: GK Kerry Almond, GD Abigail Tyrrell, WD Gabs Marshall, C Rachel Henry, WA Maria McAndrew, GA Kathryn Turner, GS Krista Enziano. Subs: Susie Armstrong, Amy Neild, Taylor Cullen.
