Springhead make hard work of beating Vale

FOOTBALL: IT proved to be a mixed weekend for the three Oldham teams in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division.

Springhead led the way with a 3-2 victory at Elton Vale. The visitors began the game superbly, causing the Vale back three all manner of problems.

It was no surprise when they took the lead after only seven minutes. Fine work by Ryan Hanson saw him find leading scorer Leighton Stephenson who slotted home from close range.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when more fine work by Hanson saw his cross met with a great header from Jonny Pauley.

The local side were threatening to run riot as Paul Stevenson then hit the woodwork.

On the half-hour mark ’Head made it 3-0 when Ryan Fagan provided the cross for Matt Dell to score his first goal since returning to the club.

But Vale gave themselves a lifeline just before half time with a close-range effort.

The second period saw ’Head produce an awful display as they were indebted to goalkeeper Osman Bushara for keeping their lead intact.

Springhead’s advantage was reduced after 65 minutes when more slack defending allowed a Vale forward to beat Bushara from close range.

The closing minutes resembled a basketball match, with both teams creating opportunities at either end, with some schoolboy defending on show at times.

In the end ’Head were happy to hold out for the three points in a match they should have won at a canter.

Springhead’s reserves were knocked out of the West Riding Trophy, 3-2 at home by Leeds City.

Avro returned from Dukinfield Town with a 2-2 draw, while Royton Town were thumped 4-0 at Hindsford.

Andy Pheby bagged a brace as leaders Uppermill won their Division One clash, 3-2 at home against Breightmet United. Jordan Stepien was also on the mark.
