John braves the elements

Date published: 16 January 2015

SATURDAY’S TH open match was marred by horrendous winds which saw several anglers lose expensive equipment as it blew into the canal.

But the competition was completed and produced a tie for first place between John Edwards (Leigh Angling Centre) and Ken Power (Tri-Cast Highfield ) with 3lb 4oz of roach and skimmers.

FRED Prudham was due to fish the Bradford No. 1 match on the River Nidd, but with the awful conditions and a badly-flooded water, the match was switched to Raskell Lakes where he managed to plunder the venue’s carp.

Using maggot at just six metres, he netted himself carp to 6lb and an easy win with 84lb.

Second-placed Steve Hodson was well behind with his 25lb net also made up of carp.

TODMORDEN AS’s team-of-three event fished on Croft Fishery and the lorry park section of the Rochdale Canal took place in freezing-cold conditions and gale-force winds.

Croft threw up some cracking weights, but the canal was a nightmare for most anglers as they failed to register a bite.

Winner of the Croft section was former Oldham rod Pete Mottram (Mighty Maggots) with his tip and bread approach netting him twelve carp and a 29lb 2oz total.

Second was Rob McEndry (Big Three) with his all-carp net, also taken on the tip, weighing 28lb 2oz.

I managed to win the canal section with 33 tiny roach, weighing 11oz 4drams. Next came Simon Walton (Rochdale Angling Centre) with two perch for 7oz.

ROGER Priestley (Maver NW) is one of the nicest guys on the North-West match circuit and he is also one of the best anglers, as he proved in the Partridge Lakes Winter League event which he won 79lb 9oz of mostly f1s, with a few carp thrown in.

ANDY Turner used local knowledge to take first place in the first round of the Slaithwaite AS Pairs Winter League with his 2lb 12oz net including skimmers and roach.

Second was Neil Burrows with his 2lb 11oz catch made up of small roach.

MEDLOCK Bridge AC’s match on the Park Lake saw Simon Cook come out on top with his tip, pole and maggot approach catching him four f1s and a decent bream which together weighed 9lb 4oz.

Geoff Dawson was second with his tip and maggot tactics accounting for three f1s and two good bream weighing 8lb 10oz.

Another match at the same venue was fished in gale-force winds and it was Peter Hill who fared best with his bait tempting a big chub, bream and four f1s which took the scales to 13lb 3oz.

Simon Cook again made the frame, this time with a big bream and five f1s that fell to pole, bread, tip and maggot and weighed 9lb 15oz.
