TABLE TENNIS:
DIVISION One strugglers Rosehill caused a shock in round one of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League Handicap Cup.
With a start of 126 points, they held to beat Glodwick ‘A’ by 13 points.
Simon Collins, Phil Ashworth and Andy Perry just held off Mark Ramsbottom (45), Jeff Craighill (35) and Wayne Renton (21), with the 25-point gap before the final doubles proving too much to bridge.
Honeywell ‘A’ comfortably saw off their ‘B’ team, turning a 53-point deficit to a 27-point winning margin thanks mainly to Dave Buckley (46) and Marcus McNulty (29).
In a repeat of last season’s Division Two final, which required a replay, Deaf ‘A’ and Grotton ‘A’ produced another thriller, with the former squeezing through in the final game of the doubles to clinch victory by four points.
Deaf ‘A’ kicked off with an eight-point advantage and were in front until the doubles.
An 11-9 win for Grotton put them three in front, but Liaqat Ali and Ian Cockcroft rallied to take the next three games 11-8 14-12 12-10 and a place in round two.
