Howard thwarted by Honley

FOOTBALL: IN the only local Huddersfield League game to survive the weather, it was a day of doubles in Heyside’s draw at Honley.

Geoff Howard’s men made crossed the Pennines to Huddersfield but were hit by two late cry-offs, by two players who got stuck... and by two halves of football in dreadful

conditions. And the match ended... 2-2.

Heyside were looking for their 11th game without defeat, and from the outset were up against it on a pitch that didn’t suit their usual style of slick, passing football.

Michael Ward unluckily had a goal ruled offside, while Leon Perry and James Leonard also went close in the opening 20 minutes.

Against the run of play the home side took the lead after 25 minutes. The deserved equaliser came eight minutes before the interval, when James Leonard drove into the Honley box and squared for Ward to make it honours even.

Heyside started the second half superbly and in the first minute Ward fed Leonard, who drove the ball home for his 24th goal of the season.

The home side equalised after 70 minutes when a determined midfielder ran from deep to score.

Heyside take on third-placed Aimbry tomorrow in a crunch promotion clash.
