WERNETH has appointed long-serving player Ian Dronsfield as first-team captain for the 2015 Lake Garage CLL season.

The 35 year old has second-team captaincy experience, but this will be his first time heading the senior side. He will be in charge of a team with a new professional in 23-year-old Sri Lankan Kaushalya Gajasinghe.

The Moor Sports Club player comes highly recommended by Werneth’s former Sri Lankan pro, Sajith Fernando, who was hugely popular at the Coppice.

Dronsfield’s appointment comes in the wake of the departure to Littleborough of previous skipper Matthew Taylor and his cousin Joe.

Said Dronsfield: “I’ve never captained the first team before, so it’s going to be a challenge in a side rebuilding after losing the Taylors.

“But it’s something I’m looking forward to. There is no pressure on us, so we have nothing to lose.”

Dronsfield hopes to retain the nucleus of last season’s squad, which was relegated from the CLL Premier Division.”

Gajasinghe will be in the Werneth squad this summer and brings an impressive CV.

A right-arm spin bowler and left-hand top-order batsman, he represented Sri Lanka under-19s and was all-rounder of the year in the Sri Lanka under-23 domestic league.
