AMIR HUSSAIN: the 11 year old is on England duty next month in the British Primary Schools’ International Championships.
Table Tennis:
ENGLAND international Amir Hussain is counting down for what could be a trophy-laden six weeks.
The young table-tennis star is gunning for glory on several fronts both local and national.
First for the 11 year old is this weekend’s Oldham Closed Championships at Hulme Grammar School.
Such is Amir’s ability - he is reigning junior champion - that he is aiming for both senior and junior titles.
He will then switch his attention to the British Primary Schools’ International Championships in Blackburn in April.
The Greenacres pupil represented England two years ago in the same competition and was also chosen for the 2014 renewal in Jersey, but wasn’t able to attend.
As part of this year’s four-strong team, Amir is hoping to achieve success much closer to home.
Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man provide the opposition.
Dad Khamal said: “He is really happy that he has been picked for England.
“He trains five or six times a week at Oasis Academy — it’s like him having a full-time job — and he also attends an England training camp once a month at Lilleshall.
“The hard work is paying off, though, and the more games he wins, the more confident he gets.”
::THERE were no fixtures in the Oldham and District Table Tennis League last week.
