SCOTT Naylor was pleased to get the 2015 season off to a strong start
His Roughyeds side produced an encouraging performance to earn a second-round trip to Barrow in the iPro Sport League One Cup.
New boys Coventry Bears were beaten 42-6, conceding seven tries and seven goals on a wet, windy and bitterly cold afternoon at Whitebank.
“We played the conditions extremely well,” summed up the Oldham coach. “We kept it simple, didn’t make many mistakes, earned our field position and scored some nice tries.
“The middle unit did really well and it was nice to see Lewis Palfrey back after injury and playing so well. As far as we can tell we came through unscathed, so that’s another positive.”
Bears boss Tom Tsang said: “We were under no illusions about how tough it would be. There were periods when we held our own, but Oldham were very good in the conditions.
“It’s been a learning curve for us, but the fact we play Oldham on consecutive Sundays is sure to hold us in good stead as we prepare for the start of the league competition.”
