Hockey:

WITH eyes on a top-three finish, Oldham Women’s Hockey Club received a helping hand with a special visit from an Olympic medallist.

Oldham-born Nicola White, who claimed bronze with the Great Britain team in the 2012 London Games, took charge of the club’s latest training session. She directed the hour-long get-together at Newman College.

Oldham club captain Yvonne Jackson said: “It was good. Nicola showed us different skills and various coaching techniques. She is a regular for England and Great Britain, so has a lot of experience. Hopefully some of the things she did and said will stick for the remainder of the season.”

White, who plays for Holcombe in the Women’s Hockey League Premier Division, caught up with a few familiar faces. Several of her team-mates from Saddleworth still play for Oldham following a club merger.

White’s invitation to train the team came from Oldham player Amanda Smith, who with Jeremy Broadbent owns Standeaven Trading Limited, one of the star’s sponsors.
