GOLF: A CRACKING field of 140 members played in Stamford’s 1-2-3 competition over 15 holes.

Winners with 71 points were Colin Kershaw, Clive Barnes and Mike Bardsley, followed by Kevin Duffy, Tony Brown and Kevin Brown (67) and Roy Sidebottom, Stuart Chilton and Mick Dooley (64).

Stamford’s first Sunday Winter League proved to be a great success, with victory going to Paul Traynor with 136 points. Steve Finan (115) was runner-up, followed by Ian Starkie (106).

The regular season starts on Saturday with an 18-hole competition.

HUSBAND and wife David and Dee Whittingham teamed up to win Werneth’s Winter League.

The competition was run in memory of Terry Marner and was organised by club professional James Matterson. It began in October and was played every Sunday throughout the winter, the best five scores counting.

BROOKDALE and Manchester golfer Joe Brice won both his matches as the Rest of Lancashire atoned for a recent run of defeats at the hands of the Southport and District GA when they prevailed 10.5-7.5 in the traditional season curtain-raiser at Hillside.

They claimed the foursomes 4-2 and won the first four singles before the hosts fought back to revive their hopes, only to lose two of the last three matches.

In the foursomes, Brice teamed up with Accrington’s Ian Hardman to beat Mark Duncalf and Geoff Harris (Formby) by one hole.

It was more comfortable in the singles for Brice, who saw off James Rooney (West Lancs) 3 and 2.
