GOLF:

TAMESIDE club Werneth Low are newcomers to the Oldham and District Golf League which tees-up for the 43rd season next week.

The Hyde outfit will compete in an expanded West Division with existing clubs switching divisions based on where their ‘A’ teams finished last season.

The make-up of the league is: EAST: Ashton, Brookdale, C&R, Denton, Fairfield, Werneth.

WEST: Blackley, Dukinfield, North Manchester, Oldham, Saddleworth Stamford, Werneth Low.

Castle Hawk also compete in the West Division, but only at ‘B’ team level.

The expansion brings an early start in the West Division with the first two games played over 12 holes rather than the full 18 in the four-match four-ball betterball matchplay format.

Ashton defend the ‘A’ league crown while Blackley’s ‘B’ team were league and cup double winners in 2014.

CROMPTON and Royton’s nine-hole Stableford competition was won by Noreen Nicholson with 16 points, on a card play-off from lady vice-captain Linda Haughton.

There was photo finish in an 18-hole event. Brenda Bellis returned 30 points to beat Andre Lowe, also on a card play-off.

At WERNETH, Marilyn Griffin, Dee Whittingham and Marianne Pickford combined to clinch a three-ball Alliance over 13 holes with a nett 42.

The runners-up were Sheila Antrobus, Susan Green and Sylvia Dempster (nett 43), from Sheila Waterhouse, Kath Lomas and lady-captain Kay Broughton (nett 44).
