Tench tips Open into Lees’ favour

Angling: JOHN Lees (Gilders) concentrated on the tip and maggot for his winning 7lb 8oz net, but it was a last-gasp 3lb tench that swung things his way in the latest of the Medlock Bridge AC open matches on the Park Lake.

Pete Cuniffe (Gilders) decided on a pole and caster approach, and it was a good decision as he netted himself second place with a decent perch added to skimmers and roach to weigh in 5lb 11oz.

SATURDAY’S open match on the Boat and Horses length of the Rochdale Canal saw some consistent weights and some decent roach caught. As usual bread punch caught the majority of the fish, but caster also played a part in testing conditions.

The winner was organiser Tony Horton with some decent roach to eight ounces taken on pole-fished bread punch, with the odd fish falling to caster as he weighed in 5lb 8oz. Second-placed John Edwards

finished with 3lb 8oz of roach.

FENTON Tenant (Gilders) continued his good run in the SADAS members-only matches on an out-of-sorts Eagle Mill Dam that was badly affected by strong winds.

Tenant fished caster at nine and 10 metres to catch himself four decent skimmers and some roach that weighed 4lb 13oz. That was enough to beat travelling partner Brian Murphy (Gilders) into second place.

CARP and silvers made up most of the leading nets in the Todmorden AS members’ away match on Cudmore Fisheries’ Panama Canal. Craig Howarth was the best of the bunch with his winning net weighing in at 47lb 15oz. That easily beat Rob McKendry’s 22lb 5oz of mostly carp.

DON’T forget the Angling Trust is running a North West Fishing Forum on Tuesday at Croft Village Hall, Mustard Lane, Croft, WA3 7BQ. The meeting starts at 7.15pm and is free. Book a place at: john.cheyne@ anglingtrust.net

I ATTENDED the funeral of Stuart Campbell this week and to say the turn-out was incredible is an understatement. All the seats were full, standing in the chapel itself was full, as was the hallway, with plenty of mourners standing outside. A fantastic send-off for a well-known and loved angler and sportsman.

CAIRO AC memberships are still available. Anyone interested in joining can contact John on 0161 665 1779 or 07796 199421.
