GOLF: PAUL Egan claimed the first Spring Eclectic Trophy — the opening major of the 2015 season at Werneth.

The seven handicapper fired a three-under-par nett 65 which pipped Louis Cordwell on a card play-off, two of only six players to break par on the speedy but uneven early-season greens.

Cordwell’s consolation was an eagle at the par-five eighth.

In the Chronicle Cup qualifier at OLDHAM, Wayne Anderson led the way thanks to a nett 62, from Gary Lee (65), who denied Rodger Kenny on a card play-off.

In the Ted Clinch Trophy at BROOKDALE, Barry Wiltshire claimed top spot with 38 points. The runner-up on a card play-off was Andy Riley (37), from Paul Wood.

The Mark Smith Classic — a four-man team event with prizes and food afterwards — takes place at STAMFORD on Friday, May 8. There are two shotgun starts at 9am and 1.30pm. The cost is £30 per player. For details call at the club’s pro shop.

PIKE Fold’s Grant Hamerton was joint first in the last of the six events which made up PGA North Mansell Finishes Winter Series. Hamerton, formerly attached to Brookdale, fired an eight-under-par 64 at St Annes Old Links. He shared top honours with Fleetwood’s David Corsby.

The overall title went to Ringway teaching professional David Brunton.
