Another Shack-attack on the cards

GOLF: PROLIFIC winner David Shacklady defends his title at Werneth’s showcase Pro-Am on Friday.

The Mossock Hall professional took the top prize with a one-under-par 67 in windy conditions last year.

But with a bumper 33 teams entered at the Garden Suburb course, the PGA North’s top professionals will have an eye on the course-record 61 set by Bridlington’s Alex Belt in the inaugural event to celebrate Werneth’s centenary in 2009.



BROOKDALE and Manchester ace Joe Brice was in the Lancashire team which fought off strong resistance from Durham to register a 10-8 win in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League at Bishop Auckland. Brice partnered John Carroll (Huyton and Prescot) to secure a half in the

foursomes, and also halved his singles match against Martin McCririck (South Shields).



ASHTON’S Luke Kelly was joint 10th in the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit’s Calvert Trophy at Ashton and Lea. Kelly carded rounds of 76 and 77 for 153 to finish in the frame behind the home club’s Christopher Rushton (74 and 70 for 144).



OLDHAM Gems’ Stableford competition was won by John Smith with 18 points, narrowly beating the scores of Frank Wardley (17) and Derek Saunders (15). Team winners with 45 points were Harold McGuinness, Jack Roberts and Frank Wardley.



BROOKDALE and Oldham fought out a 5-5 draw in the Oldham Rabbits’ League Cup competition.



TONY Roddy won a card play-off against Richard Reay to win the Veterans’ Trophy, a major at Werneth.

Countback was needed after Roddy had returned a score of 75-11-64 and Reay had carded 80-16-64.
