GLODWICK'S U-turn means the Pennine Cricket League has achieved its goal of attracting 24 clubs.

The reigning Saddleworth and District Cricket League champions had originally signed up for the new Greater Manchester League, which gets underway next year. But the successful amalgamation of the Central Lancashire League and SDCL in the Pennine League, in response to the GMCL plans, prompted a rethink by Warren Lane officials.

Though strong feelings were expressed on both sides during a members’ meeting, Glodwick opted for their first and second teams to join the PCL, which also starts in 2016, with the club's third XI entering the GMCL.

The key factor in the club having second thoughts was the impact the GMCL would have on the junior section. With almost all their local rivals choosing the PL route, they decided the best option was to follow suit.

A statement released by Glodwick said: "It was a tremendously tough decision for the club, which has been involved in every process of the formation of the Greater Manchester structure. Club officials have been advocates for the new structure and sat on steering groups to help form the prospectus.

“We have worked tremendously hard on our junior section over the past 20 years and it is now one of the finest in Oldham. It was strongly felt that the Pennine League was the best option for that section.

"The club have no regrets about initially voting for the GM League.

"Our third team is vital for the development of our younger players and key to the progression of juniors into senior cricket. We feel that the GM League gives the best opportunity for development of those players. We look forward to the 2016 season and are proud to be founder members of both leagues."
