GOLF: ROOKIE Connor Shaw landed the Werneth vice-captain’s major after a six-hole play-off.

The 18-year-old, 24 handicapper carded 66 to go with his previous week’s 65 for a 131 total that was matched by Nick Littlewood (67+64=131). Both players came in late and eclipsed what was looking like a 134 play-off between Chris Greaves and first-round leader Terry Melia.

In the play-off, Littlewood found trouble off the first tee, going in the left-hand bunker, and ran up a quadruple bogey eight to Shaw’s bogey five. That proved the difference between the pair.

SHEILA Antrobus won Werneth’s medal competition for the Marion Bottoms Cup.

Sheila (90-20-70) came out on top in a card play-off on the back nine to land the main prize. She has also been in winning form in recent competitions at Oldham.

First division sweeps went to Pat Grant (94-24-70) and Brenda Martin (96-25-71), while second division honours were landed by Dee Whittingham (104-32-72) and Gail Rowbotham (104-31-73).

Winners of Werneth’s foursomes medal were lady-captain Kay Broughton and Glynis Jones with 105-30.5-74.5. They were followed by Sheila Whittingham and Christine Moon (107-27.5-79.5).
