GOLF:

BRAD Cannings held his nerve as Crompton and Royton booked their last-eight spot in the Dunham Forest Trophy.

Cannings battled back from four down to win with a birdie on the first extra hole as the High Barn club beat hosts Warrington 4-3.

Also victorious on the day were captain Gary Melling (3 & 1) Kris Sutcliffe (2 & 1) and Scott O’Leary (3 & 2).

ASHTON ‘B’ are the first team to book their place in the Oldham and District Golf League’s end-of-season play-offs. They beat nearest ‘B’ Section East Division rivals Fairfield 5-3 to guarantee top spot and home advantage in the semi-finals.

Ashton ‘A’ will have to beat Denton 6-2 or better to make it a double for the Hurst Cross club after they lost 5-3 at Fairfield.

Denton top that ‘A’ Section East Division, but are likely to be overhauled by Werneth, who grabbed a fine 4-4 draw at the leaders and have two home games left, including a vital fixture in hand.

Dukinfield and Blackley lead in the ‘A’ Section West, but they will both have an eye on Stamford, who have games in hand for the next two weeks.

Stamford ‘B’ continue to set the pace after a 6-2 home victory over Werneth Low.

ASHTON junior Luke Kelly represented Lancashire in the Northern Boys’ Championship qualifiers at Seascale. He helped Lancashire into second place behind Durham and won the prize for the best first-round score of 71.

OLDHAM top Group ‘B’ of the Oldham and District Rabbits League’s Cup competition after an 8-2 victory over Stamford.

JOE Brice (Brookdale and Manchester) was joint fourth in the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit’s Stockport Salver at Stockport Golf Club. He shot rounds of 74 and 72 for 146, but that was not enough to match the combined total of 142 by James McCormick (Styal) and Sam Prince (Northernden), the former winning on countback.
