RUGBY:

WATERHEAD Warriors produced a much better second-half display against Crosfields — but the damage had already been done in a 26-14 loss.

The Peach Road outfit faced a mountain to climb at half-time. They had shipped 26 points and were

facing a heavy defeat. But they managed three tries of their own, through Scott Frost, Darren Nixon and Ciarab Dean. Jamie Mayall kicked a conversion.

WITH six games to go, Saddleworth Rangers are drinking in the last-chance saloon. Hopes of remaining in NCL Division One for season 2016 are hanging by a thread after they suffered a 16th defeat in 18 league matches.

Craig Fairrimond’s side was thumped 50-0 at Shaw Cross Sharks, who ran in nine tries. To make matters worse, Farrimond was sent off and three players were sin-binned.

OLDHAM St Anne’s were left kicking their heels after opponent Castleford Panthers was unable to raise a team.

The Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Two fixture was called off on game day.

Saints had been forced to shelve matches on the two previous weekends against Millom, one of which was rearranged, because of player unavailability.

On the Panthers no-show, the Higginshaw Road club secretary Barbara Henderson said: “It was an unfortunate situation, but nothing could be done.”

Saints are due to visit Millom on Saturday, and officials are confident sufficient players will be available.
