GOLF: AFTER giving up hockey 10 years ago, Chris Peirson wanted to try something new.

She chose golf - and hasn’t looked back, with a series of major successes and social enjoyment on her home course, Oldham. Captain this year — she took over from Julia Wild — Chris has thrown herself into the role.

The 54 year old said: “It’s difficult to be as competitive on the golf course when there are so many other things to sort out, but I’m really enjoying it.

“I’ve always fancied playing golf. I once played basketball and squash as well as hockey, so you could say I have an eye for the ball.

“Also, when you get to a certain time of life, the social side of the game can just be as important, and golf is great for that. The ladies’ section at Oldham is very strong, with a good set of mid-handicap players.”

Chris plays off 14, though her handicap has been as low as 12.9. She enjoys the challenges of the Lees New Road course, especially the downhill par four 17th hole.

Among her triumphs at Oldham are the lady captain’s competition in 2013 and 2014, the President trophy twice, and the Centenary Trophy.
