OLDHAM’S final major of the season, the Dunkerley Cup, was played over two days and was won by Terry Garrett with nett rounds of 61 and 67 for a total of 128.

That return gave him a seven-shot victory over Ste Daubney (69+66=135), who finished two clear of third-placed Mark Furnival (67+70=137). First-round winner was Wayne Adamson (75-9-66), while second-round honours went to Mark Stoneman (81-16-65).

Matthew Atherton was second on 33, followed by Matthew Cuppello with 26.

The first pairs will tee-off at 8.30am and the Ashton team is: Captain Anthony Lambert and lady-captain Rachel Wood; Andy Lomas and Diane Williams; Stephen Barlow and Gail Robertson; Frank Shaw and Kay Patrick; Steve McGee and Sylvia Haq; Lee Butterworth and Anna Lomas; Neil Hallsworth and Susan Barlow.

NEW member Jamie Hardman produced a stunning spell of golf to win Werneth’s last major of the season, The Grasshopper Trophy.

The six-handicapper, who recently joined from Barrow, reached the sixth tee at four over par, but then went 2-3-3-3-2, which comprised four birdies and an eagle at the par-five eighth, on the way to a nett 61.

That gave him a one-shot victory over veteran club secretary John Barlow, who rolled back the years with an impressive 75-13-62 return to beat Dave Maloney to the runner-up spot in a card play-off.

The Garden Suburb club’s final two knock-outs were decided at the weekend, with Paul Handley beating Pete Davies on the last green to win the Mellor Cup, and Jack Suttie and Sheila Antrobus claiming a 3 & 2 victory over Pete and Marilyn Griffin in the mixed foursomes.

CHERYL Eastwood scored 37 points to win a Stableford competition at Saddleworth.

Runner-up, four points behind, was Ann Allen with 33. The club’s Scott Leggatt foursomes top prize went to Fiona Hesten and Brenda Gates, who won a card play-off against Ann Fitton and Jenny Knight after both pairs had scored 33 points.
