HOCKEY:
OLDHAM Women’s Hockey Club firsts hit back from an opening-day defeat with a 3-1 win at Urmston.
It was terrific effort from Fran Lees’ side, who had only the bare 11 players due to injuries and a concurrent second-team game.
Oldham soon had Urmston on the stretch in this North Hockey Women’s League Division Two South-West clash. They went ahead through Karen Rowley, who followed up a Louise Howard shot which had cannoned off the keeper’s pads.
Oldham, playing neat and attractive hockey, doubled their lead when a brilliantly-worked move
culminated in Howard firing home a first-time shot.
It got even better for the visitors as Howard slipped the ball to Rowley from another penalty corner, and the latter crashed in number three.
Urmston pulled a goal back and went on to dominate the second half as Oldham consolidated their advantage.
