FOOTBALL: HUDDERSFIELD League high-fliers Heyside tumbled out of the Manchester FA Amateur Cup on penalties at the second round stage.

After their clash at Whalley Range ended 2-2 after extra-time, Heyside fluffed their lines in the shoot-out, losing 3-1. They missed three out of their four spot-kicks, with only Mark Hopwood successful.

Range broke the deadlock just before half-time when Gary Schofield was adjudged to have deliberately handballed in the box and the hosts scored from the penalty spot.

The lead was doubled on the hour mark, before Range then struck the crossbar. The Heyside fightback began when Daniel Dunn curled a free-kick into the corner to give the local side some hope with 20 minutes to go.

Heyside levelled when Hopwood was crudely challenged in the box and he dusted himself off before slotting home from the spot.

Heyside boss Geoff Howard said: “We were fortunate to take the tie to penalties to be honest, as they dominated the game for large parts. Credit to Whalley Range, they showed far more desire than we did.”
