Heyside are hit for six

HEYSIDE’S seven-match unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt in their Huddersfield League Division One top-of-the-table clash at Shelley as the local side were thumped 6-2.

James Leonard, Gary Schofield and Jordan Smithies all missed gilt-edged chances early on for Heyside, and those missed opportunities were punished when, against the run of play, an unmarked Shelley midfielder headed home from eight yards.

Shelley took advantage of more poor Heyside defending to make it 2-0, before slack marking at a Shelley corner saw their striker head home on the half-hour mark to complete a disastrous 10-minute spell.

Heyside deservedly pulled a goal back when Mark Hopwood fired home from the edge of the box in the 35th minute.

However, with half-time looming, Shelley extended the lead with a 20-yard lob over stranded goalkeeper Jack Suttie.

BLOCKED

Heyside started the second half well and Johnny Pauley and Hopwood both had shots blocked, before Daniel Dunn made it 4-2 with half-an-hour still to play with a fabulously-struck free-kick from 25 yards.

However, as had been the downfall all afternoon, a long ball played in behind the local side’s defence saw the home winger beat Schofield before laying the ball back for the striker’s second goal.

A late Shelley penalty put the final dent into Heyside’s miserable day.

Heyside boss Geoff Howard groaned: “Our defending was shocking and our finishing poor.

“This is a tough result to take and a harsh lesson learned.

“It’s up to us to bounce back from this disappointment now.”

Heyside’s second string beat Shepley 3-2 in Reserves Division One to maintain their second position in the table.

In Reserves Division Four, 3D Dynamos defeated Cumberworth ‘B’ 4-1 thanks to Josh Manning, Sam Anderson (penalty), Colban Collier-Hyde and Alex Berry.
