Angling: AFTER a break of a few weeks, Ken Power returned to action with a bang as he topped a weather-hit Fields Farm Fishery Thursday open on Big Beam Lake.

The Tri-Cast Highfield rod caught skimmers for 11lb 3oz to deny Bernard Thomas, who had a 9lb 13oz net made up of skimmers and perch.

Saturday’s match saw the venue return to some semblance of form. Eric Thomas was first with 16lb of carp to 6lb taken on “dobbed” bread. Runner-up Darren Mulheir had 9lb 3oz using “dobbed” bread tight over and was rewarded with two small carp.

Power had to settle for fourth, with six and 11 metres of pole and 4mm pellets working well for 40 small skimmers in a 4lb 2oz net.

IT was tough going in the final match of the fiercely-contested Pennine League for teams of six.

On patchy Mirfield and Huddersfield Broad canals, some sections were won with just one fish, while there were also plenty of blanks. Individual winner Keith Henigan was drawn on the bridge in Mirfield.

After a fruitless first half-an-hour on bread punch, he switched to chopped worm and was rewarded almost straight away with a 12oz fish. Another 14 followed and he finished the match with 8lb 7oz, overcoming the 5lb 9oz of Tom Barlow.

Maver NW Red were the leading team with 41 points, relegating their own Black team into second place (39pts). Overall league spoils went to Maver NW Red, who pipped long-time leaders Tri-Cast Calder 182 points to 173.
