Heyside 2, Golcar 1

JORDAN Hindley’s late, late strike earned Heyside a place in the semi-final of the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup following a feisty encounter with Golcar on the Crompton House 3G.

There’s no stopping Geoff Howard’s Heyside, who overcame opposition from a higher league to make progress in another prestigious competition.

As well as chasing the Huddersfield and District League’s First Division title, Heyside go to Huddersfield Town’s John Smith’s Stadium on Monday to play Hepworth United in the final of the Barlow Cup (7pm).

And Heyside will hope to have another opportunity to play at Huddersfield Town when they come face-to-face with expected higher league opposition on a neutral ground, in the semi-final stage of the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup a week tonight.

Golcar arrived at Crompton House as favourites, but Heyside were having none of it.

Heyside manager Howard said: “Golcar wanted it all their own way, but they didn’t get it, we just kept playing the way we can play.

“These are very exciting times for us as a club and we are all looking forward very much to the Barlow Cup. Hopefully we can make it to another final.”

A tense opening half produced little in the way of goalscoring opportunities, with both sides seeking territorial rights. Heyside were slightly ahead on both fronts, but Golcar took the lead after 54 minutes.

Mark Hopwood’s talent as a left-sided striker allowed him to pull Heyside level seven minutes later when he cut inside the angle of the Golcar box before firing home.

Hindley’s winner saw the big striker turn in the six-yard box before drilling an unstoppable effort between the posts.
