Whey Hey! Son shines on his dad's big day

GARETH Hey produced two rounds of stunning golf to win his father Andy's vice-captain's day prize at Werneth.

The 24-year-old five handicapper posted a first-round one-under gross 67 for a net 62 and a two-shot halfway lead.

Then Hey junior celebrated his dad's birthday in style by posting a brilliant four-under gross 64 (59 net) and a record-breaking 121 36-hole total that gave him a massive 11-shot winning margin.

Gareth, 24, who has only recently returned to the club after a spell in working in golf course management in China, was thrilled to claim the top prize on his dad's big day.

"I have been playing well for a few weeks and really wanted this but I did not want to put too much pressure on myself.

"In all honesty I could have shot even lower in the morning when I missed several good birdie chances but a birdie-eagle at the third and fourth in the afternoon just took all the nerves away and I was able to play sensibly," he said after an emotional embrace with his father after holing out on the 18th.

"I am so proud of him," said a delighted Andy.

"I really hoped he could do well but this was just amazing golf and the reaction from the rest of the club members has been fantastic.

"To make your first major win on your dad's day with an under par total is what dreams are made of for a club golfer."

Hey jnr, who is now working as a golf services assistant at the Mere golf complex, sees his handicap cut to 3.9.
