Captain leads team to championship success

CROMPTON and Royton captain Barry McLaughlin is proving to be a real team player in his year of office.

And his latest team success nearly saw him making a presentation ... to himself!

McLaughlin was in a home-club quartet that came out on top in the Oldham and District four-man team championship played at High Barn Road.

However, he had already got president Steve Horritt to stand in for him at the presentation as Barry was dashing off to a Cancer Research charity event at Lobden Golf Club.

The team triumphed on 128 (12 under) and Barry's teammates of vice captain Andy Williamson, 'A' team captain Ben Gledhill and David Harris received the trophy.

Barry's year has already seen him in winning line-ups in the Martin Beaty Golf Classic, the Oldham Athletic Golf Day, the club's Company Day.

Not surprisingly, the home club made a clean sweep of the prizes with a card play-off required on 128 to separate the captain's winning side from runners-up Jack Morrow, Martin Barnes, Jack Barnes and Andrew Simpson.

A shot further back on 129 were the quartet of Chris Clark, Graham Dyson, Henry Dyson and Tim O'Leary.
