Sunny 'Side' up for Barnes' champions

IT'S up, up and away for Heyside after they clinched the JW Lees Pennine Cricket League Championship on the final day of the season.

With it comes a place in the Premiership next season for Ryan Barnes' men, who are joined by former Saddleworth League colleagues Stayley.

Milnrow, who finished third, must beat Monton and Weaste (third-bottom in the Premiership) in a one-off game on Saturday to seal their spot in the top flight in 2017.

Heyside hammered Ashton by eight wickets.

The hosts were dismissed for exactly 100, with professional Bilal Khiljee pocketing four for 37.

In reply, Khiljee hit an unbeaten 37 and overseas amateur Jon-Ross Campbell 56, which included five sixes, as victory was achieved in the 17th over.

The nine men of Hollinwood proved no match for Stayley, who chased down the 51 required in seven overs at Millbrook.

Another low-scoring game saw Milnrow need 84 for victory at Uppermill. Mohammed Anwar junior took five for 22.

In response, the Ladyhouse club kept all wickets in tact as they coasted home with Anwar junior 59 and Lee Crabtree 23 unbeaten.

The game between Friarmere and Moorside at West View was abandoned in the seventh over because of 'player behaviour'. A report will be submitted to the league.

Moorside were 10 for three at the time.

Werneth completed their campaign on a positive note with a six-wicket defeat of Micklehurst at The Coppice.

Michael Blomeley scored 62 in the visitors' total of 121 for eight, but four contributions in the 20s saw Werneth claim a comfortable victory.

Juan-Jacques Strydom's 88 - he added a crucial 99 with Saim Ghuori (32) for the sixth wicket - lifted Shaw to 160 for nine at home to Oldham, who were restricted to 100 for nine in reply.
