Footballer Alex Cook fractured his leg playing for AFC Oldham.
FUND-raising plans are already in place following a horrendous injury suffered by AFC Oldham 2005 player Alex Cook last weekend, writes JOHN GILDER.
Barely six minutes into his debut for Oldham in their Lancashire and Cheshire League Division 'A' clash with Moston Brook at Clayton playing fields, winger Cook (pictured left) was injured, leading to the match being halted for 50 minutes as the 21-year-old underwent on-the-field treatment before being taken to the Royal Oldham hospital.
Jamie Wilson had given Oldham an early lead before the unfortunate Cook was involved in an accidental collision with a Moston player as he attempted to cross the ball into the opposition penalty area.
CHALLENGE
As Cook went down under the challenge, it was fairly clear that a serious injury had occurred and an ambulance was called.
It later emerged that Cook had received one break and two fractures to his lower right leg and that he will now spend between one and two weeks in hospital.
Oldham team manager Jimmy Smith said: "It was an innocuous challenge as Alex went to cross the ball and I wouldn't even say it was a heavy tackle.
"Obviously we wish Alex a speedy recovery."
Cook also plays for Heyside in the Rochdale Sunday League.
Oldham went on to emerge 3-2 winners against Moston.
